Clifftop Beacons, Hidden History & Fossil Beaches

This circular walk begins at Eype Mouth, known for its scenic beach and fossil finds, and leads to Seatown via a hilly coastal path with striking sea views. It then returns inland through quiet countryside and green lanes.

The route climbs Doghouse Hill, thought to be one of the oldest human settlement sites in West Dorset. Its elevated position once offered a strategic lookout over the sea. From there, the walk continues to Thorncombe Beacon, part of the historic chain of beacons lit to warn of the Spanish Armada in 1588.

The coastline here is rich in stories — smugglers once frequented the pub at Seatown, and even today, the beaches draw fossil hunters from around the world.
