Distance: 3.9 miles (6.3 km)
Start & End Point: Hartland Quay, EX39 6DU
Difficulty: Moderate – Includes coastal paths, inland tracks, and country lanes, with some steep ascents and descents.
This circular route from Hartland Quay explores the dramatic beauty of North Devon’s rugged coastline, where steep valleys drop suddenly into the sea, forming spectacular waterfalls. The trail passes through Speke’s Mill Mouth, one of the area’s most striking examples of a hanging valley. Here, moorland streams plunge over high cliffs onto rocky beaches below.
In spring and summer, the cliffs are alive with colour from wildflowers, and you may spot kestrels and peregrines gliding overhead. The inland return leg takes you through the village of Stoke, home to St Nectan’s Church – a soaring 15th-century building often referred to as “The Cathedral of North Devon.”
The walk starts and finishes at Hartland Quay, where you can enjoy refreshments and visit the small Shipwreck Museum in the historic hotel.
