Difficulty: Challenging – Uneven terrain, slippery after rain, no exit paths once entered
This dramatic walk takes you through the Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs National Nature Reserve, one of the most rugged and extraordinary sections of the South West Coast Path. The full route from Seaton to Lyme Regis is about 7 miles (11.2 km) and typically takes 3.5 to 4 hours.
The terrain is uneven and, due to clay soils, often muddy or slippery, especially after wet weather. Once inside the Undercliffs, you’re committed to the path — there are no exit routes until Lyme Regis. But for those who love wild nature, it’s an unforgettable experience.
In spring, the forest floor is blanketed with bluebells, wild garlic, and daffodils, while birdsong fills the air. The tumbled landscape — shaped by centuries of landslides — is unlike anywhere else along the Jurassic Coast.
This route is dog-friendly, though it’s best suited for dogs used to longer, more challenging terrain.
