Jurassic Coastline and Ancient Forest Fossils

This short loop walk from Lulworth Cove takes you through one of Dorset’s most fascinating geological areas. You’ll visit the Fossil Forest, where the fossilised remains of a prehistoric cypress swamp offer a rare window into life 150 million years ago — when dinosaurs still walked the earth.

The fossil forest sits within the Lulworth Firing Range, which is open most weekends and school holidays. Be sure to check ahead if you want to include this stop.

Children and adults alike will enjoy the walk’s mix of history, science and natural beauty. There’s also the iconic Stair Hole, where folded rock layers tell stories of millions of years of coastal movement. Along the route, you’ll see limestone cliffs, shingle beaches, and excellent spots for fossil-spotting.

The route is dog-friendly, with pet-welcoming pubs and beaches along the way.
