This stretch of coastline is like no other – a mix of dramatic scenery, ancient history, and classic seaside towns. It’s the only natural World Heritage Site in England and makes a brilliant choice if you fancy a long-distance coastal walk.

Your journey begins at Exmouth in East Devon, often called the gateway to the Jurassic Coast. From there, just follow the acorn signs along the South West Coast Path. Over the course of the walk, you’ll pass through 185 million years of Earth’s history. It’s a dream for anyone into geology or wildlife – and just a great excuse to get outside and walk some of the finest coastline in Britain.

Along the way, the cliffs show off different layers of time. You’ll see deep red rocks around Sidmouth, pale limestone near Beer, and striking white chalk at Old Harry Rocks. Other highlights include Chesil Beach’s long shingle bank, the calm lagoon at Fleet, the rugged Isle of Portland, and the famous stone arch at Durdle Door.

But it’s not all rocks and fossils – this walk also takes you through some of the South’s most loved seaside towns. Stop off for fish and chips or a paddle in the sea at spots like Exmouth, Sidmouth, Lyme Regis, Weymouth, and Swanage.

While the geology makes this coast so special, it can also be tricky. Some cliffs are prone to landslides, especially around Sidmouth and the Undercliffs near West Dorset. That’s why we work closely with the Jurassic Coast Trust and Dorset Council to keep the route safe and open. Before you set off, it’s worth checking our website for any updates or route changes – just to be on the safe side.
