Distance: 4.7 miles (7.5 km)
Start Point: Golden Cap Holiday Park, DT6 6JX
Difficulty: Challenging – A hilly route with plenty of ups and downs along dramatic cliff edges.
Starting from Golden Cap Holiday Park, this walk offers a true taste of the Jurassic Coast. The route takes you along the cliffs between Chideock and Charmouth, shaped over millions of years by sea and rain. Expect steep sections, big views, and — if you’re feeling brave — the option to detour around Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast.
At the base of the cliffs in Charmouth, rockfalls often reveal ancient fossils. This stretch is famous among palaeontologists and fossil hunters, offering glimpses into the deep past. Inland, the path passes through quiet farmland and old field systems that reflect the area’s long agricultural history.
After your walk, you’ll find some excellent food spots not far from the path. In Lyme Regis, Town Mill Bakery serves top-quality coffee, fresh sourdough, and lunch options perfect for walkers.
Closer to the coast, Hive Beach Café is known for its ethically sourced seafood and beachside setting — ideal for a relaxed meal with sea views. Also nearby is the Watch House Café, voted one of the top seaside eateries in the UK, offering fresh dishes just steps from the shore.
There are plenty of welcoming places to stay in the area. In Chideock, Rose Cottage B&B and Mervyn House both offer one-night stays and easy access to the trail. Chideock House B&B, set in a charming thatched cottage from 1465, is just a short walk from the path and full of character.
Self-catering travellers might enjoy Dorset Seaside Cottages, located 20 minutes from the beach, or Ammonite Cottage, a cosy Grade II-listed stay in Bridport with easy access to West Bay and the Jurassic Coast.
Looking for a hotel? The West Bay Hotel, near East Cliff Beach, combines stylish rooms with great food and a welcoming atmosphere.
To learn more about the area’s history and wildlife, the West Bay Discovery Centre is a great stop. It’s a free attraction with exhibitions for all ages. For a more scenic pause, the NCI Charmouth lookout point gives coastal views and insight into local marine safety.
