Distance: 4.7 miles (7.5 km)
Start & End Point: Buck’s Mills Car Park, EX39 5DY
Difficulty: Moderate – Includes steep ascents and descents, steps, stiles, and some rocky, potentially slippery paths
This circular walk takes you along dramatic coastal paths and through peaceful woodland between Buck’s Mills and Peppercombe. From the very start, you’ll encounter glimpses of the sea between ancient trees and have the option to descend to two secluded beaches — a perfect spot for a picnic or just soaking in the quiet.
Buck’s Mills itself is steeped in history, dating back to Saxon times, and its cobbled streets and old cottages give a strong sense of the past. Further along the route, you’ll reach Peppercombe, where you’ll find the remains of a prehistoric cliff fort and a once-grand Victorian house, now abandoned due to coastal erosion.
Midway, you can take a small detour inland to the Hoops Inn — a thatched 13th-century coaching inn, ideal for lunch or a drink. It’s dog-friendly, and so is much of the trail, making this a solid choice for walkers with four-legged companions.
